- Financial profile: Revenue of $367.1 billion and net income of $21.7 billion for the year ended Dec. 31, 2008, up 26 percent and 2 percent respectively from a year earlier. Revenue of $67.9 billion and net income of $5.3 billion for the quarter ended Sept. 30, down 34 and 35 percent respectively for the third quarter of 2008.
- Company history: Founded by William Knox as the Anglo Persian Oil Co., changed names several times, starting as Amoco in 1889, then ARCO in 1866, followed by BP in 1909, and now BP Amoco in 1998.
- Recent news: As of Oct. 28, BP will be producing natural gas from the Savonette field, located off Trinidad’s southeast coast. With the addition of Savonette, BP Trinidad and Tobago (bpTT) now produces gas from 12 offshore platforms. Savonette will help BP to maintain its production of more than 450,000 barrels of oil per day. In the United States, safety regulators served the BP Texas Refinery in Houston with a fine of $87.4 million for failing to fix safety violations, discovered after an explosion at the refinery in 2005.
- Fun fact: Capable of producing 15,000 kW of wind power in the United States.
- Stock: Listed as BP on NYSE, trading between $44.62 and $52.69 in the quarter ended Sept. 30.
