(Oxford) For many students, finding their future spouse while at Miami is not an uncommon thing. Nearly 15 percent of Miami University alumni marry one another, becoming part of a trend in which they become known as a "Miami Merger."

To honor these couples, the university set out last summer to break the world record for the most couples renewing their wedding vows at once. The 'Merger Moment' ceremony took place last June at Upham Arch.

On February 2nd, the Guiness Book of World Records announced that Miami has officially broken the record. Miami gathered 1,087 couples during alumni weekend, June 20, 2009 to renew their vows. Many were Miami Mergers, but the crow also consisted of Miami Acquisitions (alumni married to non-Miamians), Miami parents, faculty, staff, the community and President and Mrs. Hodge.

The previous record was 624 couples renewing vows in Pitsburgh in 2008.

City of Oxford Mayor Prue Dana officiated the ceremony.
