The Miami University women’s softball team started their season on Tuesday with a doubleheader against Western Illinois. The Fighting Leathernecks came out on top in both games, winning 5-1 in the first game and 5-3 in the second. Miami falls to 8-12 on the season. Miami’s Jessica Simpson gave up an average of a hit per inning. The RedHawks were unable to get back into the game. In the second game, Casey Drees had her first RBI of her collegiate career. Alicia Hogl and Sarah Billstrom scored two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Western Illinois came back strong with four runs at the top of the fifth inning. The RedHawks will host Robert Morris, Canisius, Michigan State and Toledo for the Miami Invitational. The first game is 4 p.m. Friday, Mar. 19 against Robert Morris.
