Health Care Bill Creates Change for Miami and the Nation

(Oxford) On Sunday, March 21st, Washington made history by passing the highly anticipated health care reform bill, but the senate’s decision has many Americans questioning the affect of this reform in the coming years.

The highly debated policy was finally signed into law after senate approved the new legislation that hopes to eventually provide affordable health care to 32 million Americans who are currently uninsured.

Police Suggest Ways to Sexual Assault

Across college campuses nation wide, sexual assault is a real and unfortunate issue that students face. With two recent reports of sexual assault on Miami’s campus, Oxford police and University staff are taking efforts to educate students and increase awareness about the realities of assault.

According to the National Victim Center, approximately one in three women and one in seven men will be sexually assaulted at some point during their lives.

Cleve Jones visited Miami University February 2nd as part of Miami’s lecture series.  In the late 1970's Jones was an intern for Harvey Milk, who became the first openly gay man to be elected to public office when he won a seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977.
Milk’s story was popularized in the 2008 biopic “Milk,”  in which young actor Emile Hirsch plays Jones.

H1N1 Flu: Lucky Number Seven

Ungodly. That’s the word that comes to Stephanie Eldred’s mind when she thinks about her bout with H1N1 flu.

Her symptoms started out weak but became progressively stronger in just two days.

“I was lucky number seven,” said Eldred, junior international studies major

She attended the first day of classes despite her symptoms. On Tuesday, she went to the health center and was diagnosed with the H1N1 virus.

She didn’t leave her house for five days.

The professor welcomed Kelsey back to class and congratulated her on overcoming her bout with Swine Flu.

He might as well have stamped Quarantine on her forehead, thought Kelsey Viets, a senior at Miami University.

Viets was well aware that she had just recovered from H1N1 flu or Swine Flu.

She said it seemed like yesterday that she had woke up on Labor Day morning to a cold sweat, a fiery throat and a pounding fever.
