Living a Legacy

Escaping from their locker room as if it were ablaze, they fly onto the ice, a blur of red and white. The fire extinguishers below their bench send smoke cascading out ahead of them—as if they were in the clouds. The blades of their skates crash onto the frozen surface, forceful and graceful at the same time. All twenty players in unison, with their long playoff hair flowing behind them, skate the final pregame warm-up laps and assemble in a line at the mouth of their goal.

NCAA compliance a must in down economy

OXFORD, Ohio, Nov. 23, 2010 -- As Miami University continues to make cuts throughout all departments, the Athletic Department is under increasing pressure to save money and become more self-sustaining through revenue-generating activities. With this financial stress looming, it is more important now than ever before to comply with National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) regulations.

The Athletic Department is leading the way in this venture, working toward increasing external revenues and donations from student-athlete alumni, especially in the Red and White Club’s funding.

OXFORD, Ohio, Oct. 21, 2010 -- As a whole, Miami University has raised about $391 million for its $500 million Love and Honor Campaign. Miami's Athletic Department, meanwhile, is working towards a $50 million goal after reaching its initial $30 million target in 2008. 

If it hits that mark, the Athletic Department will use that money in a number of areas including student athlete scholarships, facility renovation projects and coaching salaries in the coaching excellence fund.

Instead of cutting scholarships from its budget, the Athletic Department is making cuts in their administrative and operational fees, and planning ways to increase outside revenue.

Miami selects head tennis coach after lengthy search

OXFORD, Ohio, Sept. 9, 2010 – After being without an official head coach for almost a year, the Miami University Athletic Department has found a permanent women’s head tennis coach in Anca Dumitrescu, a former assistant coach at Georgia Tech. When former head coach David Emery resigned last October, the program appointed Ricardo Rosas, Miami’s assistant tennis coach, as interim head coach until a nationwide search and application process could be conducted.

The RedHawk baseballers are starting to get on…dare we say a winning streak? After a close loss to Xavier last Wednesday, the team won all three games of their weekend series v. Akron, winning the first game 6-5 in 12 innings, 7-4 on Friday, and a crushing 12-5 victory Sunday. The Red and White head north up 75 this weekend to take on Bowling Green in what should be the battle of the birds. Falcons and ’Hawks play at three on Friday, and at one p.m. both Saturday and Sunday.
